About Spirit Wood designs

Spirit Wood Designs is a small, family operated business.  But that doesn't mean our methods or shop are small.  We have a fully-equipped shop, stocked with the best machines, cutters, and hand tools possible.

While many of the operations are performed on power equipment, the complex curves and fitted joints inherent to our design require many hours of hand shaping and finishing to really make the stands come alive.  Our name is branded on an inside leg of every stand we sell it's not just a product, it's a part of ourselves and we're very proud of the work we put into each stand.  We're constantly making minor adjustments to the design to improve on what we think is an excellent design.

We start with the best lumber we can get two-inch thick oak for the legs, back strap and framing, and one-inch lumber for the body.  This makes an extremely strong and sturdy stand.  We plane the lumber down to the desired size ourselves.  The joints used in construction are the same used in the construction of fine furniture.  Joints subject to stress are mortise and tenon joints, reinforced with hardwood dowels.  Even the glues used are chosen for the particular joint, with cross grain joints assembled with glue that permits flexibility for movement as the wood expands and contracts over time.  Our stands are meant to be a part of your home and family for years.

I've been a woodworker most of my life, but building custom cabinets, bookcases and furniture has never given me as much satisfaction as I get from this.  The design is my own, a combination of love of woodworking and love of horses.  There is something so very graceful, powerful and majestic about horses.  I don't have to explain that to a horse lover; you know what I'm talking about.  I don't claim to have reproduced that in a saddle stand.  But I do try -- and hope I've achieved -- in a small way to capture a bit of that spirit.  The saddle doesn't just sit on the stand, it belongs there.

While this is the only design we currently offer, I'm at work on a number of other items that I hope will complement this line, including a stand designed to bring the spirit of the horse into the home for those in the English riding discipline.
